Oman's second city, Salalah, is situated along the crystal blue coast line of the Indian Ocean. In marked contrast to Muscat, the capital, Salalah is about the only corner of Arabia that catches the Indian summer monsoon.

It is also the best base for exploring the villages and archaeological sites of southern Oman. The archaeological ruins of Al-Balid, site of the ancient city of Zafar, lie about 5km east of Salalah. Zafar was an active trading port in the 11th and 12th centuries.

Best time to visit...

The best time to visit is between July and September when the Khareef (monsoon) turns Salalah into an oasis, with lush tropical landscapes and babbling brooks adding to the outstanding beauty of this idyllic location.
